Nissan debuts solar Ariya

Nissan has unveiled a solar-powered version of its Ariya electric SUV, showcasing how future EVs could harness sunlight to supplement battery charging.
Developed by Nissan’s Advanced Product Planning team in Dubai and its Powertrain Planning team in Barcelona, the concept integrates 3.8 square metres of high-efficiency photovoltaic panels into the bonnet, roof and tailgate. The polymer and glass-based panels generate DC electricity, which is managed by an advanced controller designed to optimise energy use and reduce reliance on external charging infrastructure.
According to Nissan, testing under real-world conditions highlights the system’s potential. In ideal circumstances, the solar installation can deliver up to 23 kilometres of additional range per day. In high-sunlight cities such as Barcelona, the concept is capable of generating an average of 17.6km of daily driving range from solar energy alone.
Year-round averages also indicate gains across diverse climates, with estimated daily solar range additions of 10.2km in London, 18.9km in New Delhi and 21.2km in Dubai. Nissan says this could reduce charging frequency by between 35 and 65 per cent, depending on usage patterns.
The project was delivered in collaboration with Dutch solar mobility specialist Lightyear, which supplied the next-generation panel technology. Long-distance testing, including a 1,550km drive between the Netherlands and Barcelona, suggested solar integration could cut annual charging visits for a 6,000km-per-year commuter from 23 to eight.
Shunsuke Shigemoto, Vice President ePowertrain and ICE Powertrain at Nissan AMIEO, said the concept demonstrates how innovation and sustainability can move forward together, offering customers greater autonomy and reduced charging dependency.
Nissan says the solar-powered Ariya aligns with its broader ambition to achieve carbon neutrality across the life cycle of its products and operations by 2050, positioning integrated solar charging as a potential contributor to the next phase of electric mobility.
