Daimler Buses has partnered with engineering specialist FEV to develop the first hydrogen-powered Setra coach, unveiling the “H₂ Coach” technology demonstrator as a step toward locally emission-free long-distance travel.
Based on a conventional Setra platform, the demonstrator replaces the traditional diesel powertrain with a hydrogen fuel cell electric drive system. The project is designed for testing purposes and showcases the feasibility of hydrogen propulsion for coach applications, offering refuelling times comparable to conventional fuels and a range of at least 800 kilometres per tank filling.
Daimler Buses and FEV jointly carried out the complete system conversion, from concept development to integration. FEV was responsible for mechanical integration and electrical and electronic (E/E) architecture, bringing together components sourced from various Daimler Buses and Daimler Truck technology platforms into a fully functional powertrain.
The vehicle features a Cellcentric fuel cell unit delivering 300kW of electrical output. Two hydrogen tanks with a combined capacity of 46kg supply the system, while a central electric motor produces 320kW continuous output and up to 400kW at peak. An integrated battery system supports intermediate and peak load demands.
Safety engineering was a central focus of the development program. The partners implemented measures addressing crash load scenarios, functional safety, high-voltage systems and hydrogen-specific safety requirements. Following approximately two years of joint development, the vehicle achieved approval from German technical inspection authority TÜV and successfully passed electromagnetic compatibility testing before being handed over in mid-2025.
Klaus Wolff, Vice President Project Management at FEV, said the project demonstrated how complex subsystems can be integrated into a testable and safe complete vehicle when vehicle, powertrain and E/E expertise are aligned. He highlighted the collaboration as a key factor in delivering the demonstrator from concept to approval.
The H₂ Coach provides Daimler Buses with a real-world platform to evaluate hydrogen fuel cell technology for long-haul applications, as the industry explores alternatives to battery-electric systems for extended-range passenger transport.
