History

 

The Society of Automotive Engineers, Australasia (SAE-A) was founded in Melbourne in 1927, to address the need for further education in all facets of automotive engineering across Australasia.

SAE-A’s vision is to advance the mobility and engineering professions across the region through the transfer of technical knowledge and skills, networking and learning, encouraging research and development and the uptake of emerging technologies and new innovations, and influencing policy across industry, education and government.

The organisation focuses on innovations across land, sea and air including defence and aerospace, rail and rolling stock, marine, heavy vehicles (on and off road), automotive, electric and autonomous vehicle technologies, specialty vehicles and micro-mobility.

Since its inception in1927, the SAE-A has undergone a few name changes to reflect industry and market changes.

1927: Australian Institute of Automotive Engineers to the Institution of Automobile and Aeronautical Engineers before settling on the Society of Automotive Engineers, Australasia in 1967.

Launched in 2026: the organisation changed its name to the Society of Mobility Engineers, Australasia >>.
