SAE Oil Filter Test Procedure
The lube oil filter becomes an integral part of the engine lubrication system and is subjected to variations in operating conditions that are difficult to duplicate. However, with the equipment and procedures set forth in this test code, comparisons with effective filters for “in service” applications can be made with a high degree of confidence.
This lubrication oil filter test code is to provide means for evaluating the performance characteristics of full-flow oil filters on bench equipment. This combined with data collected from in-service applications may be used for establishing standards or performance goals for filters tested in this manner.
Sections include:
- Normative Reference
- Accuracy of Measuring Instruments and Test Conditions
- Resistance to Flow
- Filter Capacity and Containment Removal Characteristics of Full-Flow Filters
- Single Pass Particle Retention Capability Test
- Media Migration Test
- Collapse Test for Lube Oil Elements

Opposed Piston Engines - Evolution, Use, and Future Applications
AUTHOR(S): Jean-Pierre Pirault, Martin L.S. Flint
Opposed Piston Engines: Evolution, Use, and Future Applications explores the opposed piston (OP) engine, a model of power and simplicity, and provides the first comprehensive description of most opposed piston (OP) engines from 1887 to 2006. Design and performance details of the major types of OP engines in stationary, ground, marine, and aviation applications are explored and their evolution traced.
The OP engine has set enviable and leading-edge standards for power/weight refinement, fuel tolerance, fuel efficiency, package space, and manufacturing simplicity. For these reasons, the OP concept still remains of interest for outstanding power and package density, simplicity, and reliability; e.g., aviation and certain military transport requirements.
Using material from historic and unpublished internal research reports, the authors present the rationale for OP engines, their diverse architecture, detailed design aspects, performance data, manufacturing details, and leading engineers and applications. Comparisons to four-stroke and competitor engines are made, supporting the case for reconsidering OP engines for certain applications.
Topics include:
The history of OP engines
Aeronautical
Automotive
Military
Marine
Unusual OP engines
Comparison between 2 and 4 stroke engines
The future of OP engines
and more

Tire Forensic Investigation: Analyzing Tire Failure
AUTHOR: Thomas Giapponi
“It takes a trained eye working in a systematic fashion to find the unusual detail that leads to the root cause contributors to a tire’s failure,” writes author Thomas R. Giapponi. “The goal of the tire forensic expert is to keep digging backwards, looking for root cause(s) and putting as much of the tire story together as possible.”
Tire forensics is the methodical analysis of failed tires in order to identify the causes of a tire’s disablement. By using the laws of physics, math, chemistry, and engineering – mixed with real-world tire background and experience – tire forensic experts determine the most likely events that led up to and caused a tire to fail.
Tire Forensic Investigation: Analyzing Tire Failure covers the many ways that a tire can fail, and shows how to identify that failure. Based on the author’s 30 years of experience in the tire industry, the book looks at the methodical, physical, visual and tactile examination of the failed tire and identifies the various failure modes for passenger car and light truck tires.
Chapters cover:
Belt separation
Belt separation identification
Other belt separation types
Identification of causes and contributors to belt separation
Non-belt separation identification
Various tire conditions – identification
Balance weight mark identification and significance
Tire location on a vehicle
Addressing several failure theories
Visual and tactile nondestructive tire investigation techniques
“There is a combination of science, experience and some art that goes into the research and analysis of a tire failure,” Giapponi writes. Tire Forensic Investigation: Analyzing Tire Failure will provide tire forensic experts and researchers with the technical background needed to determine tire failure causation.

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT)
B.Anderson, J.Maten
J.Maten This reference contains the latest knowledge on vehicle development with CVT powertrains, transmission assembly design and performance, and the design and development of the five major components of CVT technology: launch device, variator systems, geartrains, control systems, and lubrication. Building on an earlier SAE publication, the 38 technical papers selected for this book cover updated information on a variety of topics within the area of CVTs. Although this book is not intended to represent the full body of CVT technology, it provides technical presentations and their reference documents, which can lead to discussions covering several topics of interest in CVTs

Car Suspension & Handling, 4th Edition
John P Whitehead & Donald Bastow
Originally published in 1980, this classic book has now been updated and expanded to make it invaluable for today’s engineers. Car Suspension and Handling, 4th Edition focuses on the suspension and handling of cars, or automobiles, as opposed to those characteristics of other types of road vehicles, while always recognizing that there are differences in suspension requirements for different classes of vehicles, and in various markets of the world for a given vehicle. Through appendices and diagrams, Car Suspension and Handling, 4th Edition outlines the purpose and history of vehicle suspension systems, while defining the basic parameters of suspension geometry. In addition, the book delves into human sensitivity to vibration, and offers data on durability, tire background information, steering calculations and suspension calculations.

Automotive Lubrications Refererence Book - 2nd Ed
The automotive lubricants arena has undergone significant changes since the first edition of this book was published in 1996. Environmental concerns have dominated both newspaper headlines and industry boardrooms in recent years, with particular attention being given to the improvement of air quality. This 2nd edition also considers the recent phenomenon of increased consolidation within the oil and petroleum additive arenas, which has resulted in fewer people for research, development, and implementation, along with fewer competing companies. The Automotive Lubricants Reference Book, second edition addresses these and many other important issues by providing a solid foundation to this element of automotive engineering. Comprehensive and timely, this publication is an ideal reference for anyone involved in the automotive lubricants industry.

Advanced Three way Catalyst
By Dr. Joseph Kubsh
The 50 SAE technical papers included in this volume touch on all aspects of the significant systems engineering effort that has occurred within the broad automobile catalytic emission control technology base during the past fifteen years. Dr. Joseph Kubsh, Deputy Director of the Manufacturers of Emission Controls Association, hand-selected the publications for this volume from hundreds of technical papers published by SAE that address catalytic emission control technologies for light-duty gasoline vehicles. These papers include efforts to improve the performance, durability, and cost effectiveness of the catalytic converter systems used on gasoline stoichiometric engines and the integration of these three-way catalysts into sophisticated powertrains capable of operating at near-zero tailpipe emission levels. They provide a retrospective look at the evolution of the key technology developments that have occurred on automotive three-way catalysts since the early 1990s from research and development laboratories worldwide.
