Scoring

The scoring for this year’s competition has been revised to better achieve the intent of the competition.  It includes revisions to the scoring to provide more emphasis on the vehicle’s design and engineering, rather than the performance of individual drivers. The most significant change is the increase in the score for Design, along with a reduction in Presentation and Autocross and increase in Skid Pad. It also reflects the increased emphasis on energy reduction/fuel consumption in society.  Formula SAE is intended to be an educational competition which teaches students about design, teamwork, business requirements, working to the pressures of meeting timelines and recognising that engineers should understand and meet changing societal expectations.
It is not meant to be a premium racing competition.
As both Formula Student in Europe and Formula in the USA are changing their future scores to better reflect fuel economy as well as rebalance scoring between the other events (but with slightly different approaches), it is sensible that we also implement changes to the scoring.  These have been under consideration for a number of years.  The scoring we have chosen is a sensible balance between Europe, USA and local, and should enhance the attraction of the competition.

The revised scoring has not added any new criteria and, by modifying the balance between points for some events, provides flexibility for all types of engines and vehicles without advantaging or disadvantaging any team.  The revised scores reinforce the value of designing and building a well balanced vehicle, as has always been the intent of the competition.”

The following chart highlights the old and the revised scoring for your information.  Please note the revised event scoring can be found in the “Event handbook” on the Formula SAE-A website.  Refer to the attached link http://www.saea.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/2011-Event-Handbook-Draft-v2.pdf
