We invite SAE and their members to participate as an industry partners in a new Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Manufacturing Industry Innovation (MIICRC). I attach for your attention an Information Memorandum, which lays out the objectives of the MIICRC and the benefits it will bring.

The core partners of the MIICRC are the University of Melbourne, The Australian Industry Group, the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia and CSIRO.

Rapid changes in the global manufacturing landscape mean we must rethink conventional notions about the manufacturing sector in Australia if it is to have a viable long-term future.

The MIICRC research agenda will cover multiple perspectives including technology and business, finance and public policy, and innovation at all scales – Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, industry grouping or cluster, industry sector and business environment – to address Australia’s manufacturing future and how it will be funded. The MIICRC research program will focus on four key interconnected themes:

• Foresights on sector disruptions
• Agile manufacturing
• Rapid productisation
• Driving sector sustainability.

Through your engagement with the MIICRC we hope to develop high impact outcomes for Australian manufacturing that will enable companies to become more productive, agile and responsive to changes in the global manufacturing environment.
