In particular, precautions need to be taken when dismantling the hybrid battery, electric motor and generator, invertor/convertor and air conditioning compressor. The Hybrid Vehicle Dismantling Manuals also provides a Product Safety Data Sheet on the HV (Nickel Metal Hydride) battery. Familiarisation and observance of these precautions will ensure safe dismantling of Hybrid Components.

The CD-ROM issued March 2nd will also provide details on the free hybrid battery recycle process that is done in conjunction with Toyota and Lexus Dealers. The free hybrid battery recycle process was developed prior to Hybrid vehicles being released in Australia. In the event of a damaged or leaking hybrid battery, an EPA approved sealed container is supplied to transport the hybrid battery to the recycler. Details on recycle process and dealer assistance will be included.

The Hybrid Camry Emergency Response Guide was developed to educate and assist Emergency Services, Motoring Clubs and Tow Truck Operators in the safe handling of Hybrid Camry following an incident. In particular, precautions need to be taken where site clean-up (i.e. for battery spill), vehicle recovery (i.e. towing, jump starting) or occupant recovery (jaws of life or cutting / recovery equipment) are deemed necessary. The Hybrid Camry Emergency Response Guide also provides details on basic operation of hybrid vehicle components. Familiarisation and observance of these precautions will ensure safe clean-up and correct vehicle handling minimising any vehicle hazards.

This bulletin reinforces the need to ensure the vehicle electrical system is deactivated to prevent the possibility of the drive train and air conditioning system from activating inadvertently, prior to any attempt to rescue occupants when a vehicle is involved in an accident .

Emergency Response Training Course
Toyota Institute Australia is developing a training course (Power point) for Emergency Services and Motoring Clubs which can be used for self study and will be available in the 2nd Quarter 2010. Also during the year our Regional Technical Training Centres in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne & Adelaide, will conduct Hybrid Training for Emergency Services & Motoring Club personnel. This training is intended for the persons responsible for training within each organisation to assist their understanding so they can deliver training to all their personnel. For further details, please contact John Cutler - Manager Technical Training (john.cutler@toyota.com.au).

The 2010 Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) Program selection round opened today, with a key focus on manufacturing and social innovation.

Senator Kim Carr, the Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research, called for applications to the 2010 CRC Program selection round. The program supports research partnerships that deliver key economic, environmental and social benefits to Australia.

“I anticipate a very strong field of applicants for the 2010 CRC Program selection round, the 13th round since the program’s inception in 1990,” Senator Carr said.

“Applications from all industry and community sectors and research disciplines are invited. I am especially calling for applications in two priority areas - manufacturing innovation and social innovation.

“These areas closely fit the program’s objectives and are important priority areas for the Rudd Government and Australia.

“Manufacturing innovation can focus on traditional areas such as automotive, textile, footwear and clothing industries, or in new and emerging industries such as scientific and medical instruments, specialist engineering, aerospace, and advanced materials.

“Social innovation will target areas of major social challenge and will be interpreted broadly. Issues such as ageing, substance abuse, participation in education and sport are possible priority areas. Other areas include low socio-economic groups, rural and remote issues, and Indigenous Australians.

“The program will continue to support innovative research that relies on cross-disciplinary and collaborative approaches, to drive research solutions to the major challenges facing Australians today.”

The Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research will conduct information sessions around the country in February/March.
